Some of the remedies that I found to be ineffective include:

  • Icing the sore
  • Zilcatin
  • Anbesol
  • Bee pollen/bee products
  • Myrrh
  • Crushed aspirin
  • Antivirals

The last item, antivirals, was actually prescribed by a doctor who insisted canker sores are caused by a virus, which they are NOT!  (A quick check of the Mayor Clinic site or any other authoritative source will quickly reaffirm this).

There is an infection that occurs mainly in young children called the Coxsackie virus that resembles clusters of small canker sores, but this is a totally different condition.

The moral of this story?  Some doctors aren’t very aware of the latest canker sore research, so you might well have to take matters into your own hands.

Many doctors seem to brush off the condition as a mere nuisance.  Obviously they do not suffer from these sores!  So good luck on your quest to find a remedy that works for you.  I hope this site proves to be a valuable resource in your quest.
